The experimental dance film named The 1st Dissonant Piece for the Camera and the Body began with Nastasja Stefanic's and Matija Kralj's research. By conducting a survey among people of different professions, and using the already established terms of consonance and dissonance they sought for interpretations from other perspectives/disciplines/mediums. The redefinition of the concept thus becomes the starting point for further work on the material, within which, the research maintains an advantage over the human need to reach a consensus.
The occupying (or re-conquering) of spaces not intended for human use or spaces that once had a clear purpose, but now only faintly reflect the former presence of life within them sets the movie on the border between non-spaces, and the unquenchable needs for establishing a space. By playing with filling and/or emptying a space, along with intense directing and editing interventions, a new space for the film is established that has not yet been inhabited, which beckons for the establishment of some sort of communication. But to make communication possible at all, the film warns of a necessity to constantly question the terminology we already use (both linguistically and physically, as well as through film). The combination of camera and body movement is put in the forefront, and is subsequently joined by the choreography of editing that further emphasizes the constant balancing between harmony and disharmony, pleasure and discomfort, passivity and activity; as well as a refusal to only be satisfied with one solution. The instability and consequent elusiveness of the film’s material stimulates the viewer’s senses, with the tendency to interrupt the passive position of the recipient of its message, and strives to activate the position of the viewer who is led, through watching, to discover their own definition of dissonance. That is, if one exists at all.
